Sisters In Cali

My sisters and I met up in Cali to go wedding dress shopping with my oldest sis April. It was a blast! She was able to find her dress and get some good leads on locations, as well. This is Jo and I trying to embarrass Jamie and April as they got off their plane. I think we succeeded in embarrassing some more than others. . .
Beautiful Mom in the airport!
My dad has been sprucing up his building to get ready for a new tenant (hopefully!). This Baldwin sign has been hanging there since I was 8 years old (Jonah's age).
After two days of shopping we celebrated April's finds with a trip to the Yardhouse restaurant. April and JoAnna got a half-yard of beer each and we were surprised at how tall it was!
(These got a little out of order) Jamie rockin' out on the key-less grand piano in the window of Dad's building. I am so blessed to have both godly and fun sisters!!

Pics By Jonah

Jonah took these adorable pictures of Brynne the other day at breakfast. I am trying to talk the boy into taking a photography class through our homeschool co-op, but I don't think he's gonna go for it. . .

The Easiest Bread EVER

Last fall I started making baguettes from scratch. Pre-pregnancy, you know. Since I've been feeling consistently better these past couple of weeks, I wanted to try my hand at this easy bread recipe I found online (my notes are in bold).
No Knead, Dutch Oven Bread
1/4 tsp active dry yeast
1 1/2 cups warm water
3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting.
You may use white, whole wheat or a combination of the two.
1 1/2 tsp salt
Cornmeal or wheat bran for dusting
In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in water. Add the flour and salt, stirring until blended. The dough will be shaggy and sticky. Seriously sticky.
Cover bowl with plastic wrap. Let the dough rest at least 8 hours, preferably 12 to 18, at warm room temperature, about 70 degrees.
The dough is ready when its surface is dotted with bubbles.

Lightly flour a work surface and place dough on it. Sprinkle it with a little more flour and fold it over on itself once or twice. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let it rest for about 15 minutes.
Using just enough flour to keep the dough from sticking to the work surface or to your fingers, gently shape it into a ball. Generously coat a clean dish towel with flour, wheat bran or cornmeal. Put the seam side of the dough down on the towel and dust with more flour, bran or cornmeal. Cover with another towel and let rise for about 1 to 2 hours. Or three, which I should have done because my kitchen is c-c-c-cold. I was afraid it was never going to rise!!
When it’s ready, the dough will have doubled in size and will not readily spring back when poked with a finger.

At least 20 minutes before the dough is ready, heat oven to 475 degrees. Put a 6- to 8-quart heavy covered pot (cast iron, enamel, Pyrex or ceramic--I used my stainless stock pot) in the oven as it heats.
When the dough is ready, carefully remove the pot from the oven and lift off the lid. Slide your hand under the towel and turn the dough over into the pot, seam side up. The dough will lose its shape a bit in the process, but that’s OK. Give the pan a firm shake or two to help distribute the dough evenly, but don’t worry if it’s not perfect; it will straighten out as it bakes. I sprinkled the top with course salt cuz it's yummy.

Cover and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the lid and bake another 15 to 20 minutes, until the loaf is beautifully browned. Remove the bread from the Dutch oven and let it cool on a rack for at least 1 hour before slicing. I opened the lid and took the above picture. I couldn't believe how rustic and pretty it was for the little amount of time and fuss involved. We couldn't wait and dinner was ready, so we dove right into it and it was delish.
Easy no-fuss, no-knead, through-it-together-and-forget-about-it-for-a-day bread.
Let me know if you try it!

Time Out

For a diaper change. Brynne got everything out by herself and proceeded to change the baby. Now if we could only get it to stop crying...

As you can see, we had a windstorm the other night! One of our full-grown 50+ feet fir trees broke half way down due to rot (unknown to us!) and landed not 2 ft away from our neighbors house!! Praise the Lord that it didn't smash anything other than the fence. Jon (with lots of help from friends cleared the entire thing in one day. Poor guy, it was the fence he just built a little over a year ago .

Hello Old Friends

Thanks for the wonderful comments via blogger or facebook telling me to get my booty in gear and get moving on the blog again--it is good to be loved and missed.
I have now (as of five minutes ago) upgraded our photo storage on blogger so we can (for a slight fee) keep in contact with all you lovely people. . . and I promise I won't pass that fee on to you (yet!).
The only catch is that it takes up to 24 hours to process the order and so we are left without picture posting capabilities until tomorrow. . . trust me, I tried already. But check back soon to hear all about how our crazy (you think I'm joking) January is going: Why Jon had to spend his whole day off (with a lot of help from friends) in the backyard today, how that check-up on that choo-choo in my tummy went, and why I listed my menu on the sidebar as "The Two Mama's Menu". Oh, and to see pictures of the kids, of course!! (We know who you really want to see, Grandmas!)
Hope to see you all (or for you to see us) soon.

Sooooooo, I know there are no pictures in the Christmas photos below...the problem is that Blogger says I have exceeded my photo storage quota. What?! I didn't know this was possible. Guess so. We will be figuring out the technical difficulties and working to resolve them, in the meantime, sorry you can't see cute photos of my kids. Might this involve a switch to Wordpress?

Christmas 2008

Christmas this year was a little different. We had a white Christmas, the first that I can ever remember. We had so much snow and ice the week before Christmas that the news is saying it's the worst season for retailers in 40 years. We spent a wonderful day at William and Heather's house and luckily Poppop (who tried to cancel Christmas--thinking they weren't going to make it) and Nana were able to hike down their hill and be with us.
Ava and I were listening to Christmas music the other day and a chorus of "Salvation is here because of Christmas Day" came on. She said to me, "Momma, that's not true! Salvation is here because Jesus died for us, not cuz of Christmas Day!!" I said, "But what if Jesus was never born, Ava?" "Ohhhhhh!" she said (A little light bulb went on).
Merry Christmas!!

Jonah on Christmas

"I'm going to close my eyes and when I open them I will be surprised!"

"Yay! A mini disc catcher!"

"Now I have $70!!"

"I've always wanted my own CD player!!!"

Ava on Christmas

"I can't believe it's finally Christmas!"

"Yay! A tea party set for my dollies!"

"Oh...my....word...I've always wanted a Target Dollie!"

Brynne on Christmas

"I'm not sure how to open this..."
Sidenote: Brynne saw these babies in my closet and was freaking out because she wanted them and was crying for them, and of course, the mean mom that I am, I said, "Nope, those are for Christmas!"

" OOooooohh! I love those babies!"

"Cheese!"

"See ya later--I'm not taking any risks on Momma taking these!"

Snow, Snow, and More Snow!!

Even as I write this post, the snow is falling. . . again. The picture above is before the deluge of snow hit this past Monday. You can see the snow was barely covering the ground...that was then.
This is now! The kids could no longer get the Gator out to drive around (it doesn't have chains, darn it). You can hardly see the pruned rosebushes...
Ava scooping the snow off the grill. She is up to the tops of her boots in a snowdrift! The patio set below is about half-buried!

Day Two of All-Day "Morning Sickness"

How on earth can anyone call this "Morning Sickness?" I am calling it my couch sickness, because that is where I have to stay all day long. I just finished catching up on all your wonderful blogs and most of you are making cookies and yummy treats and doing wonderful Christmas-ey crafts with your little ones. I am dying to do it, too, and yet my (forgive me) vomit-reflex does not allow. My poor kids will have to be satisfied to live vicariously through you all while they watch movies and do workbooks and color some more pictures as I lay on the couch, once again.
As I lay I have been praying for a lot of you (hey, I've got some serious time on my hands) and also for my own growing family, Jon and the kidlets, especially the one growing inside me. That our Father would grow him or her strong and straight; that he or she would not be easily influenced by this world. For the kids and Jon, that Christmas would not be something to "get through" this year while Momma's sick, but that the meaning would penetrate their hearts. And also that this sicky-season would pass quickly!!

Jonah Turns 8 (Can you believe it?!)

Jonah celebrated his birthday with a few friends, cake, and pizza. It was a great time!

Happy Birthday Jo-Jo! We love you so much and are very proud of the brother, son, and young man who loves Jesus that you are becoming more each year. Yay for EIGHT!!

It goes on and on and on

I know you all were wondering "How's that kitchen coming?" Well, I thought I would let you see some of my progress. The curtain is on the back door, complete with red rick-rack and the magnetic spice rack is mounted on the wall, thank you Moopie. You can see that I took the time and care to organize my kitchen before I took these, so please no looking for cake crumbs. haha! The cabinets are still waiting to be painted, but all in good time, my friends. This week my Moopie is installing new black outlets and light switches for me!
